Betty Lee-Lawrence
Sioux Lookout
Betty Lee-Lawrence has a long history of community involvement. She sits on the Sioux Lookout Economic Development Commission, which oversees community revitalization, planning and promotion and the Urban Reserve Committee. A hockey mom, she helps organize tournaments and fundraises for minor hockey, girls hockey, Grade 8 school trips, the high school travel club and the high school bursary.
Betty has also assisted the local figure skating club, and served as secretary treasurer for First Step Women’s shelter. She was a long-time organizer of the Ladies Night Out Charity Auction, and, for a few years, coordinated the silent and penny auction for the Relay for Life (Canadian Cancer Society). In 1983, Betty was the very first coordinator of the Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival.
Betty is a Funding Service Officer with Indian & Northern Affairs Canada.

Edward (Ted) Hanley
Terrace Bay
Edward Hanley’s many community activities have included serving as an alternate member on the Ontario Welfare Council, President of the Association for Early Childhood Education of Ontario, Windsor Branch, Vice-Chairman of the United Community Services Committee on Aging, Windsor and committee member of the Overture Concert Series. He was also President of the Terrace Bay Minor Hockey Association and has had extensive coaching experience including coaching Terrace Bay Minor Hockey and Thunder Bay Junior Baseball and Senior Men’s basketball.
Mr. Hanley is a retired educator. He earned a B.Sc. from Loyola College, Montreal, in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Educational Sociology from Wayne State University, Detroit, in 1978. He is a certified teacher with experience at the elementary, secondary, college and university levels. Mr. Hanley was Divisional Director of Continuing Education at St. Clair College, Windsor, where he originated successful programs in health and applied arts.



Gordon Armstrong
Rainy River
Gordon H. Armstrong has a long history of community service. He served as the town’s mayor for 15 years and was the pastor of Covenant Church in Rainy River for 11 years. He has volunteered on various boards, including the town's recreation board, the Covenant Church Board, the Chamber of Commerce and the Rainy River Future Development Board.
Gordon is currently a councillor of the Town of Rainy River. He is a former supervisor at Dryden Paper Company, and ran his own businesses for 24 years.

Janet Judson
Emo
Janet Judson is secretary-treasurer for the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society. She is a member of the Emergency Planning Committee for the Township of Emo, serves on the board of the Atikokan Crisis Centre, and volunteers with the local Meals on Wheels.
Janet was the former coordinator for Emo Ambulance Volunteer Service and a paramedic for the EMO Ambulance Service until her retirement in 2007. She is a member of the Ontario Registered Nurses' Association and the Ontario Paramedics Association.

Jason Hughes
Thunder Bay
Jason Hughes is actively involved in his community. He is the President of the HAGI Foundation for Independence and President and Unit Director of the Northwestern Ontario Air Search and Rescue Association (NOASARA). Mr. Hughes is also President of the Nor’ Western Flying Club and a member of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association. He takes a dedicated interest in the development and growth of Northwestern Ontario.
Mr. Hughes is an Honours Bachelor of Commerce graduate from Lakehead University with a major in business finance and a minor in accounting. Currently he is a financial planner with a large financial organization.

John L. Remus
Thunder Bay
John L. Remus is an active volunteer in his community. He is a Founding Member of the Canadian Association of Medical Evaluators where he is actively involved. Dr. Remus is also a member of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, and a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto. He has been a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for more than 25 years and is a retired Lieutenant Colonel currently serving as the Honourable Lieutenant Colonel to the 18th Field Ambulance in Thunder Bay. Dr. Remus is the Founding President of the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society and is a former board member of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
He is a specialist in occupational medicine and is the Corporate Physician to the City of Thunder Bay, Bombardier Mass Transit, Abitibi Bowater, Thunder Bay Telephone, Thunder Bay Hydro, and the Thunder Bay Police and Fire Services. Dr. Remus has travelled to many communities in northwestern and northeastern Ontario biannually seeing referred patients in their own communities.
He operates an orthopedic practice and is also an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the Northern Ontario Medical School. He has been the Orthopedic Consultant for a variety of sports teams including the Toronto Argonauts, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Canadian National Swim Team, Canadian National Wrestling Team and the Canadian National Boxing Team.



Joseph Romeo Duguay
Fort Frances
Mr. Duguay has been very involved in his community. He volunteers with the Valley Adult Learning Association and has served as chair of the Board of Fort Frances Legal Clinic and as board member then chair with the Northern Community Development Services (NCDS).
He was an economic advisor with the local Tribal Council (Pwi-di-goo-zing Ne-yaa-Zhing Advisory Services in Fort Frances) and is now in private practice operating Tri-Tek Consulting Services.



Keith Nymark, Chair
Thunder Bay
Keith Nymark is an active volunteer in his community. He is currently the Treasurer of Coalition for Waverly Park and has served as a Board member and Personnel Committee Chair of the Lakehead Social Planning Council.
He is the Publisher of the monthly Thunder Bay Seniors Paper and a retired Supervisor of the City of Thunder Bay’s Recreation Department.



Linda Hamilton
Fort Frances
Linda Hamilton is an active member of her community. She is president of the Canadian Cancer Society Fort Frances branch and founder and co-chair of the Women’s Health Symposium. Ms. Hamilton is also a member of the selection committee for both Riverside Health Care Front Street Housing and Moffit Foundation. She is the founding member of Fort Frances Community Chest, which she has been extensively involved.
Ms. Hamilton is a real estate agent.

Lucille Michaud
Longbow Lake
Lucille Michaud has served on many volunteer committees in the areas of literacy and economic development. More recently, she was a member of Toastmasters and Rotary. Lucille has been a volunteer with the Foundation since 2005.
Lucille has over 20 years experience working in an aboriginal context with a primary interest in governance, management and community development, mainly in Northwestern Ontario. That experience speaks to her close relationship and understanding of the First Nation and aboriginal environment.
A certified professional facilitator, Lucile is a member of Migisi Sahgaigan (Eagle Lake First Nation) in Northwest Ontario. She joined the Aboriginal Services Team of Meyers Norris Penny LLP in December 2007 following a successful period of self-employment.

Margaret Fiddler
Sandy Lake First Nation
Margaret Fiddler is a volunteer in her community. She currently serves on the Hydro One Remotes Advisory Committee, and is involved in the United Church of Canada.
Although non-Native, Ms. Fiddler married into the Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community of 2,300 Oji-Cree residents, located north of Red Lake. She is well aware of the issues and challenges faced by Aboriginal people and remote residents of Ontario.
She was the Founding Principal of Keewaytinook Internet High School, the first accredited Internet high school in Ontario, and Wahsa Distance Education Centre. Both centres provide isolated First Nation learners with schooling through distance program delivery. Ms. Fiddler is a retired educator and administrator.

Miriam Wall
Thunder Bay
Miriam Wall’s volunteer work has included serving on the International Business Committee of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, and serving as a director of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and Development Thunder Bay.
Miriam Wall is a Professor and Coordinator of the International Business Program at Confederation College. In the past she has served as National Trade Coordinator and Business Development Officer of the Lake Superior First Nations Development Trust, on contract with Aboriginal Business Canada.

Rita Demetzer
Kenora
Rita Demetzer serves as treasurer of Sioux-per Speakers Club, vice-president of Hudson Hospital Auxiliary, and member of Sioux Lookout Material Girls Quilt Guild. She is a former chair of the Sioux Lookout Public Library Board.
Rita Demetzer is assistant to the CEO of Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. Prior to this, Ms. Demetzer served as Development Officer for the health centre, and worked for a large bank as a personal trust officer.

Sandra (Sandy) Lychowyd
Thunder Bay
Sandy Lychowyd is an active community member. She is a Past President of Children’s Centre in Thunder Bay, the Lakehead Rotary Club and the Thunder Bay Business Women’s Network. She has also served on the Board of Governors of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and as Vice President of Children’s Mental Health Ontario in Toronto.
For over 20 years, Ms. Lychowyd has worked with non-profit agencies to provide programs and services and to advocate on behalf of people living in Northwestern Ontario. She was Regional Director for The Kidney Foundation of Canada for eight years and worked with the Community Auditorium, the Ontario Humane Society and was General Manager of Shelter House. She also spent two years working with the City of Thunder Bay as a consultant on the Inward Investment Project, designed to attract new business to Thunder Bay.
She is currently in Administration for Bayshore Home Health.
