The Ontario Trillium Foundation is one of the few funders of capital improvements for Ontario’s not-for-profit sector. OTF, through the Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin and Sudbury Grant Review Team and its Chair Huguette Roy-Perron, has listened to community groups when they have told us how much they value our capital grants, and we continue to recognize the importance of these grants.
The Sudbury Kinsmen Family Centre Foundation will receive $75,000 over one year to install an elevator that will make the House of Kin in Sudbury more accessible. It will then be better able to meet the needs of individuals from all areas of Northern Ontario who travel to Sudbury for medical treatment. Porcupine Ski Runners Cross Country Ski Club will be awarded $45,000 over one year to help redevelop the club’s chalet by renovating the septic system and water line. The improvements will enable the club to continue to operate, accommodating current users and enabling future growth.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Ontario's 2008 spring budget boosted the Foundation's annual funding to $110 million from $105 million, which will be further increased to $120 million by 2009-2010.
Thirty-One Community Groups in Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin and Sudbury Receive More Than One Million in Grants
Sault Ste. Marie, December 3, 2007 - Community organizations in Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin and Sudbury will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that funding totalling $1,151,000 will help 31 organizations meet local needs in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
“For 25 years, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has built healthy and vibrant communities, one community organization at a time,” said Minister Carroll. “Ontarians live better lives today because of the good things community organizations do in their communities.”
OTF, through the work of the Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin and Sudbury Grant Review Team and its Chair Huguette Roy-Perron, is investing in the charitable and not-for-profit sector. This funding plays a tremendous role in financing improvements to community facilities and helping organizations build their capacity, train volunteers and expand their programs.
In Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin and Sudbury, OTF grants make a difference. Chapleau Education and Training Coalition Inc. will receive $103,000 over three years to assist with the operation of an innovation centre in the Chapleau area. It will provide access to job-related training, career counselling, job-search support and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents. Club de ski de fond de Hearst Cross-Country Ski Club will be awarded $65,000 over one year to replace existing trail grooming equipment, which will enable the club to provide safer and better groomed trails and help promote skiing in the community.
OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues.

$13,000 over one year to upgrade photocopying and computer equipment in the Arts Council office. These new tools will improve its administrative operations and its ability to promote the arts in the community.
Barrier Elimination Action Corp.
$80,000 over two years to hire a full-time co-ordinator who will increase awareness and eliminate barriers faced by people with disabilities in Timmins.
Chapleau Education and Training Coalition Inc.
$103,000 over three years to assist with the operation of an innovation centre in the Chapleau area. It will provide access to job-related training, career counselling, job-search support and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents.
Chapleau Figure Skating Club
$5,600 over one year to purchase an on-ice jump-training harness and a new sound system, which will enhance figure skating training and performances.

$14,400 over one year to replace old and worn gymnastics equipment. The safety of participants will then be enhanced and the continuation of a quality recreational and competitive gymnastics program will be ensured in this small rural community.
Christy's Light Foundation
$40,000 over one year to enhance the capacity of this emerging organization so it can provide support to people in Sault Ste. Marie affected by eating disorders.
Club de ski de fond de Hearst Cross-Country Ski Club
$65,000 over one year to replace existing trail grooming equipment, which will enable the club to provide safer and better groomed trails and help promote skiing in the community.
Cochrane Ontario Lions Club Inc.
$55,000 over one year to replace broadcasting equipment used to operate a community television station and electronic Bingo equipment for games that will help raise funds for charitable community projects.
Corporation of the Town of Blind River
$9,400 over one year to purchase equipment that will enhance the fitness programs offered at the community centre and help to increase participation, especially by young people.
Corporation of the Town of Gore Bay
$6,000 over one year to replace exterior doors at the community hall and assist with the cost of refinishing the basement floor. These improvements will provide a more comfortable and safer place for community groups to meet.
Corporation of the Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional
$10,000 over one year to drill a new well at the Sylvan Valley Hall to improve water flow. This will provide a safer water supply and ensure that the facility continues to be available for community groups to gather.
Elliot Lake Granite Club
$50,000 over one year to replace the roof at the Elliot Lake Granite Club in order to ensure the continued operation of the only curling facility in the community.
Hands-On Recreational Committee & Municipality of French River c/o Municipality of French River
$45,000 over one year to build a permanent concrete skate park in the Town of Noëlville. The park will provide children and youth with a safe venue for skateboarding and in-line skating.
Howland Senior Citizens Club
$15,000 over one year for accessibility improvements to the Howland Senior Citizens Club hall in Sheguiandah. People with mobility difficulties will then be better able to participate in community activities at the hall.

$35,000 to undertake a feasibility and sustainability study, and prepare a business plan and preliminary drawings for a community recreation and performing arts centre planned for Noëlville.

$25,000 over one year to replace the chiller in the municipal arena, ensuring the recreational space remains available for hockey, curling, ringette and recreational skaters.

$40,000 over one year to enhance the community profile and fundraising capacity of this Sault Ste. Marie organization dedicated to supporting women who have mental health concerns, are victims of violence or are living in poverty.

$10,300 over one year to replace roofing shingles at the Kapuskasing Legion Hall. Repairs will prevent leakage and damage to the newly renovated upstairs area and ensure the hall continues to be used for community events, activities and gatherings.

$7,000 over one year to purchase portable digital sound equipment for the volunteer coaches and accessories for the gymnasts. This will help to improve the delivery of the rhythmic gymnastics program at this Sudbury club.
Sault International Youth Association (SIYA)
$80,000 over two years to enhance the capacity of this Sault Ste. Marie based, youth-focused organization to engage the youth of the community through the publication and on-line version of Fresh magazine and other activities.
Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society
$15,000 over one year for renovations to garden plots and pathways at the Allard Street community garden. These upgrades will enhance accessibility and safety and increase the number of garden plots so that more people are able to participate.
Shadows of the Mind Film Festival
$40,000 over one year to hire a co-ordinator for this Sault Ste. Marie film festival and purchase equipment, including an inflatable screen and projector. This will enable films to be shown in more venues and increase public access to them.
Sudbury Better Beginnings Educational Fund
$93,800 over two years to operate a life skills club for children aged 9 to13 years in a low-income neighbourhood in Sudbury. School results will then improve and youth leadership among participants will be enhanced.
Superior Children's Centre
$85,000 over two years to deliver a recreation program for children aged 0 to 6 years and their parents in isolated communities in Northern Algoma District.
Theatre Cambrian
$12,700 over one year to purchase theatrical lighting equipment, helping the organization’s dinner theatre productions in Sudbury to be more cost-effective and enhance artistic and cultural life within the city.
Township of Chapleau
$13,600 over one year to purchase furnishings and equipment for a new teen drop-in centre in Chapleau. A safe and supervised location for recreational activities will then be provided for youth in the area.

$50,000 over one year to complete renovations at the club’s Vermillion Lake Camp property. Accessible washrooms and showers will be installed at the facility, which provides a camp experience to over 1,000 people in Sudbury District annually.

$75,000 over one year toward the costs of a new two-ton truck to deliver food from the Cochrane Food Bank, which operates as a central warehouse/distribution centre for 17 food banks in Northeastern Ontario.
Community Living Iroquois Falls/L'Intégration Communautaire
$66,000 over one year to purchase a wheelchair-accessible van that will help transport people with mobility difficulties to day programs, medical appointments, and recreational and social events.

$15,000 over one year to purchase sound and lighting equipment that will help establish this new local theatre group. Volunteerism will be encouraged and arts and cultural activities provided for people of all ages, especially youth.

$15,000 over one year toward the cost of developing a park where local youth can skateboard, bike and rollerblade. This will encourage healthy physical recreation in a safe location away from traffic and pedestrians.

$35,200 over one year to purchase a new brine delivery system and a condenser for the club. The new ice-making equipment will help the club continue to provide curling as a healthy winter activity for all ages in the community.
The Gore Bay Curling Club Incorporated
$25,000 over six months toward the cost of replacing the existing ice-making plant in this curling club, benefiting curlers from Gore Bay and surrounding communities on Manitoulin Island.
Independent Living Resource Centre Corp.-Sudbury
$75,000 over one year to provide computer skills and life-skills training to persons with disabilities, helping to improve the quality of life for this group and providing more opportunities for employment and community engagement.
Iroquois Falls Cross Country Ski Club
$11,300 over one year to purchase cross-country ski trail-grooming equipment for the club. The new equipment will save many volunteer hours and result in better and safer trails for skiers.

$10,000 over one year to purchase a new ice scraper, which will help improve ice quality for curlers and provide safer, more effective equipment for employees and volunteers to use.

$55,000 over one year to provide this railroad heritage centre in Capreol with additional exhibits. The new features will attract additional visitors and tourists, while improving and preserving this unique and educational historical site.

$13,000 over 12 months for improvements to 5.2 km of hiking trails at Star Lake near Timmins. Information panels that describe the flora, fauna, industry and history of the area will be installed at the interpretive centre located at the trail head.

$50,000 over one year to replace the boiler at the Navy League Hall. These renovations will allow the organization to continue providing affordable recreational activities for over 150 youth in Sudbury.

$44,600 over one year to purchase additional gymnastics and trampoline equipment, enabling more boys to participate in competitive gymnastics and more girls and boys to participate in competitive trampoline activities.
