Community Groups in Halton-Peel Receive More Than $2.6 Million in Grants from The Ontario Trillium Foundation
Brampton, April 7, 2008 – Community organizations in Halton-Peel will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that many of the 27 grants totalling $2,630,800 will help organizations enhance community spaces. Funding will improve accessibility and comfort, increase energy efficiency or be used for innovative technology.
“Our government is committed to fostering healthy and vibrant communities, right across Ontario,” said Minister Carroll. “These Ontario Trillium Foundation grants will help build a stronger province by fuelling local economies and improving the quality of life of Ontarians.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is one of the few funders of capital improvements for Ontario’s not-for-profit sector. OTF, through the Halton-Peel Grant Review Team and its Chair Lindsay Williams, has listened to community groups when they have told us how much they value our capital grants, and we continue to recognize the importance of these grants.
Barbertown Co-operative Homes will receive $100,000 over one year to replace the toddler and youth playground equipment in this large social housing complex in Peel. Trafalgar Township Historical Society will be awarded $75,000 over one year to help restore a one-room historic schoolhouse in the former Trafalgar Township in Oakville. The building will be used as an archival centre, for heritage education and as a community meeting space.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Ontario's 2008 spring budget boosted the Foundation's annual funding to $110 million from $105 million, which will be further increased to $120 million by 2009-2010.
The Community grants listed below were ratified on March 6, 2008.
Anba Abraam's Coptic Charity
$122,000 over two years for transportation and a full-time manager to improve the overall capacity of the food bank. It will then be able to provide food and other needed items for families in the Mississauga area.
Barbertown Co-operative Homes Inc.
$100,000 over one year to replace the toddler and youth playground equipment in this large social housing complex in Peel.
Brain Injury Association of Peel and Halton
$38,000 over one year to support staff to expand group programs, and develop and begin implementing a comprehensive sustainability plan. The association will then be able to continue providing community-based support programs.
Canada Hindu Heritage Centre
$21,700 to purchase a new audiovisual system that will help improve the professionalism and production of more cultural performances throughout Peel.
Canadian and African Business Women's Alliance
$67,000 over two years to help low-income and newcomer women in Peel improve their economic situation through self-employment training and mentorship. Another OTF grant will support this activity.
Canadian Community Arts Initiative
$53,000 over nine months to celebrate South Asian artistic culture by holding the dynamic Mosaic Festival 2008 in Mississauga's central core.
Centre d'entreprenariat et d'insertion professionnelle féminin de Peel-Brampton (CENIP)
$77,500 over two years for a school integration and orientation program for Francophone newcomers' families. This will facilitate children's participation and better academic performance while helping parents to become more engaged in the community.
Collaboration in Special Education: Enhancing Student, Parent and Educator Success c/o The Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario
$61,400 over nine months to ensure a successful parent-professional partnership that advocates for the education needs of students with special needs. A conference and a summer training program for the regions of Halton and Peel will be organized.
Habitat for Humanity Mississauga
$225,000 over three years to hire an executive director to help establish a Mississauga Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Home ownership will be promoted, families helped and a ReStore developed.
Halton Active Living Network (HALNet) c/o Oakville Family YMCA
$188,900 over three years to help implement the Blueprint Halton community physical activity plan. The level of physical activity in Halton will increase and a more favourable policy environment will be created.
Halton Food For Thought
$81,600 over two years to develop and sustain a program that provides meal cards to high-school students at risk to support them staying in school.
Halton Industry Education Council
$107,000 over two years to develop the Men as Career Coaches program and expand the Women as Career Coaches program. These provide youth with access to adult role models who will share career pathways and promote self-esteem in Halton Region.
Halton Region Food Bank Network c/o Food for Life Canada
$225,000 over three years to implement Halton Food for All, a regional food-acquisition and distribution model that increases collaborative approaches to better meet the food needs of low-income citizens in the region.
Malton Early Years Advisory Committee (MEYAC) c/o Family Education Centre
$375,000 over five years to implement a community leadership and engagement project for youth and adults within the black community in Malton. The project will facilitate an enhanced sense of belonging and individual and community well-being.
Milton Speedskating Club c/o Ontario Speed Skating Association
$15,000 over one year to purchase new loaner speed skates, which will increase access and help meet growing demand for the sport in the fast-growing communities of Milton and Halton Hills.
Mississauga Soccer Club Inc.
$88,800 over one year to assist in installing artificial turf in three new indoor soccer fields. These improvements will allow the club to meet the demand for additional year-round venues to train players and coaches.
Mississauga Synchronized Swimming Association
$33,900 over one year to increase participation in this Mississauga-based club by hiring a part-time administrator and purchasing equipment that will increase the capacity of the club to attract new members.
Mississauga Waterfront Festival Inc.
$150,000 over two years to obtain staff who will assist the organization in building its internal capacity. This resource will help to support the long-term growth and viability of this waterfront festival that attracts over 50,000 people annually.
Oakville Doors Open Committee c/o Oakville Historical Society
$15,000 over 15 months to hire a co-ordinator who will help launch the annual Oakville Doors Open, an event that provides access and cultural education on the many heritage sites of Oakville to residents and visitors alike.
Oakville Literacy Council
$157,200 over three years to increase staff hours. This extended availability will support additional outreach, fundraising and partnership development, helping to increase the capacity of the organization to support literacy students.
Peel Family Mediation Services
$225,000 over three years to run and evaluate a pilot outreach project. Family law information and parent education workshops will be brought directly to the South Asian community of Peel and the number of cases going to mediation will be increased.
Streetsville 150th Celebration Committee c/o The Mississauga Heritage Foundation Inc.
$41,500 over one year for marketing costs, volunteer expenses and a co-ordinator to produce Streetsville's 150th anniversary celebration, which will commemorate and help preserve the rich heritage of the village.
Streetsville Tigers Hockey Club
$12,000 over one year to provide goalie skills instruction for this Mississauga-based club, which will enhance the overall quality of play for the members.
Studio 21 Project c/o Central West Specialized Development Services - Halton Support Services
$23,500 over one year to deliver quality day-time recreational opportunities for young adults aged 21 years and over with special needs in Oakville. The program will help participants develop life skills.
Trafalgar Township Historical Society

Visual Arts Brampton
$10,000 over one year to support the delivery of new media and video-on-demand workshops for children and adults in the community by purchasing new computer equipment and helping to obtain instructors.

$40,800 over one year to produce theatrical events, publish a newsletter and update a website. These activities will help youth in Peel gain skills, raise their awareness and take action about social and political issues.
Twenty-Six Community Groups in Halton-Peel Receive More Than $3.2 Million in Grants
Brampton, December 3, 2007 - Community organizations in Halton-Peel will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that funding totalling $3,282,200 will help 26 organizations meet local needs in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
“For 25 years, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has built healthy and vibrant communities, one community organization at a time,” said Minister Carroll. “Ontarians live better lives today because of the good things community organizations do in their communities.”
OTF, through the work of the Halton-Peel Grant Review Team and its Chair Lindsay Williams, is investing in the charitable and not-for-profit sector. This funding plays a tremendous role in financing improvements to community facilities and helping organizations build their capacity, train volunteers and expand their programs.
In Halton-Peel, OTF grants make a difference. Malton Neighbourhood Services will receive $373,400 over five years to provide affordable and varied summer camp and after-school programs. These activities will help to broaden learning and recreational opportunities for children and youth aged 11 to 20 years. Community Gardens/Learning Gardens Initiative c/o EcoSource Mississauga will be awarded $300,000 over four years for materials, administration and support services to create community gardens and school-based learning gardens. The project will foster community building and local food production and improve the natural environment.
OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues.

Applewood Centre for Adult Learning
$170,000 over three years to establish the organizational infrastructure for a learning centre that will provide recreational and social day programs for young adults with developmental disabilities in the Mississauga area.
Autism Ontario - Halton Chapter c/o Autism Society Ontario
$150,000 over three years for equipment and services that will enhance the administrative capacity of this group and strengthen its ability to expand services and provide support to families of children with autism in Halton region.
Brampton and Area Community Foundation
$84,600 over two years to help strengthen the Foundation’s capacity to grow its endowment portfolio. This will enable it to become self-sustaining and increase its financial support to the not-for-profit sector in Brampton and area.
Burlington Choral Society
$6,600 over one year for materials, tools and instructors to support music learning activities for the choir and improve performances. Outreach will also be conducted to attract audiences to high-quality choral concerts in the local community.
Caledon Cougars Basketball Association c/o Basketball Ontario
$6,200 over one year to purchase six shot clocks and help the club implement international Basketball Federation rules and conform to Basketball Ontario standards in Caledon.
Centre of Excellence Project c/o Service Charities Council of Oakville
$215,000 over three years for a media campaign and manager to help promote awareness and fundraising for the new Reach Out Centre for Kids. This new centre of excellence will enhance local service delivery for children's mental health services.
Circle of Friends for Seniors Project c/o Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton
$75,000 over two years to develop and pilot a new collaborative volunteer-based model of respite care services for seniors with memory impairments across organizations in Hamilton and Halton. (Another OTF grant will support this activity)
Community Gardens/Learning Gardens Initiative c/o EcoSource Mississauga
$300,000 over four years for materials, administration and support services to create community gardens and school-based learning gardens. The project will foster community building and local food production and improve the natural environment.
Community Living Mississauga
$62,100 over three years for communication materials, events and advertising that will increase awareness of the agency, promote partnerships with corporations and civic groups and engage volunteers to provide support to clients.
Foodpath Interfaith Peel Association to Tackle Hunger
$100,000 over one year to acquire a new cooler and freezer system. These upgrades will increase the capacity of this Mississauga food bank, enabling it to store and distribute more perishable food products to hundreds of families in need.
Halton Youth Symphony
$10,900 over two years to offer a richer and more rewarding experience for members and audiences by providing coaching and purchasing new music for this Oakville-based youth symphony.
Interim Place
$145,000 over two years to develop programs, policies, education and outreach in order to increase appropriate access and services for marginalized groups in the Region of Peel.
Intrada Brass of Oakville
$80,000 over three years to initiate the biennial Young Brass Players' Competition in Oakville. Outreach performances and promotional activities will also be conducted to help the band build a wider audience base.
Kerr Street Community Services
$85,000 over one year to furnish and equip the new Kerr Street Youth Centre in Oakville. Music, art, educational and recreational programming and activities will be provided, leading to healthy youth participation and development.
Kralj (King) Zvonimir Croatian Folklore Group
$47,200 over one year to promote and preserve Croatian folklore traditions. Costumes and instruments will be purchased that will benefit the young members of this group based in Peel Region.
Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children
$216,000 over three years for computers, training supplies and staff to strengthen and expand the organization's peer-support program for their surviving parent/caregivers in Halton.
Malton Neighbourhood Services
$373,400 over five years to provide affordable and varied summer camp and after-school programs. These activities will help to broaden learning and recreational opportunities for children and youth aged 11 to 20 years.
Mississauga Arts Council
$40,000 over one year to improve access to this arts council's services through the creation of a dynamic and user-friendly website for the arts organizations and the wider community in Mississauga.
Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Mississauga Chapter - Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada Ontario Division c/o Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
$111,900 over three years for administration, computer software and a co-ordinator to improve the fundraising capacity of the organization, helping it to sustain services for clients who suffer from multiple sclerosis in the Mississauga area.
Oakvillegreen Conservation Association
$184,600 over three years to initiate the Heritage Tree Initiatives: Enhancing Our Urban Forest across Oakville. The project aims to raise community awareness and engagement in protecting the local environment and threatened community urban forests.
Peel Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) c/o Peel Children's Centre
$225,000 over three years for a co-ordinator to enhance the provision of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder services in Peel, increasing early identification, intervention and treatment of children affected by the disorder.
Peel Paramedic Association
$22,900 over one year to provide equipment and trailer storage that will enhance the association’s ability to provide community education and promote CPR, health and injury prevention programs.
Quality Early Learning & Care Mentoring Partnership c/o Child Development Resource Connection Peel
$178,000 over three years to support the implementation of Raising the Bar, a community, peer-driven program that promotes effective practices for quality early childhood education and care in Peel.
Transracial Parenting Initiative c/o Halton Multicultural Council Inc.
$150,000 over three years to create and test an educational program for Halton Region families fostering and adopting children from a different race or culture. This will help increase transracial parenting competency and enhance child resiliency.
Wellspring Chinguacousy Foundation
$163,800 over three years to recruit, train and manage community volunteers. They will assist professional staff in delivering cancer support services to residents of Brampton, Caledon and surrounding areas.
Youth Can Move The World c/o Rapport Youth and Family Counselling
$79,000 over two years to support an annual symposium for youth in Peel Region on world citizenship, environmental awareness, and social and economical issues. This will also offer improved volunteer experiences for community agencies and youth.

$181,000 over three years to build organizational capacity by hiring a volunteer co-ordinator. Public awareness will be raised and meaningful volunteer participation supported in this food service organization that helps hundreds of people annually.
Bridging The Gap Productions
$44,000 over one year to produce a play that engages the diverse multicultural community of Mississauga in exploring sensitive issues of marriage and relationships.
Burlington Sailing and Boating Club
$57,000 over one year to purchase a new sail fleet and upgrade the transfer equipment, which will improve the quality of training programs provided by the junior sailing school and the Able Sail programs in Burlington.
Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club
$66,000 over two years for marketing materials, administration costs and a head coach, which will help enhance current programs and introduce recreational synchronized swimming to Burlington and surrounding areas.
The Carpenter Hospice
$163,900 over three years to establish a hospice day program in the City of Burlington that will provide support, care and respite to terminally ill patients and their families.
Cedar Mills Classical Riding Club
$25,000 over one year to make upgrades to the Caledon-based classical horse-riding facility. A safer and more wholesome environment will be created for the horses, riders and audiences during training and performances.
The Chamber Music Society of Mississauga
$15,000 over one year to support a musical-theatrical in-school program that will introduce high-quality classical music and provide cultural experiences to over 2,500 elementary school students in Peel.
Clean Air Champions
$10,500 over two years to launch the Clean Air Achievers program in Halton schools. It will encourage youth aged 11 to 15 years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve their fitness levels through active modes of transport and lifestyle. (Additional grants of $21,800 to Eastern Ontario and $117,700 to Toronto will support this activity.)
Community Environment Alliance of Peel Inc.
$375,000 over five years to implement Shape the Future in Peel, a community-based, result-oriented initiative that will engage youth, neighbourhoods, businesses and local organizations in energy conservation and other sustainable practices.
Don Rowing Club of Mississauga
$65,200 over two years to acquire safety and training equipment and to hire part-time staff. These will support increased programming, growth in membership and effective club operations in this, the only rowing club in the City of Mississauga.
Elder Help - Peel
$25,000 over 15 months for materials, administration costs and skills that will build the capacity of the organization, enabling it to hold annual intergenerational conferences for seniors and youth in the Brampton area.
For You Telecare Family Service Inc.
$30,000 over three years to provide Korean-Canadian fathers with the resources necessary to build stronger and healthier relationships with their children by hosting regional workshops, seminars, outreach events and self-help groups in Mississauga. (Additional grants of $30,000 to Simcoe-York and $90,000 to Toronto will support this activity.)
Greater Hamilton Symphony Association
$104,400 over three years for a director of business development and outreach costs to introduce the symphony to Burlington audiences and prepare for the transition of their performances to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre in 2010.
Kinsmen Club of Oakville
$15,000 over one year to purchase a barbecue and other concession equipment for use at outdoor festivals, which will help improve the capacity of the club to raise funds for local charities.
The Living Arts Centre in Mississauga
$123,100 over two years to pilot and develop the centre's school-outreach program in French. This will provide hands-on learning experiences in visual and performing arts to thousands of school children in the Region of Peel and beyond.
Mississauga Mandarin Association
$22,000 over one year to hire part-time program staff, help fund program costs and purchase a sound and lighting system. Cultural and recreational events, volunteer recruitment and fundraising in the Chinese community will then be improved.
Oakville Arts Council
$52,000 over three years to develop and distribute a pocket Guide for the Arts in Oakville, a publication that will help promote awareness and encourage participation in arts and cultural activities in the community.
Ontario Genealogical Society, Halton-Peel Branch c/o Ontario Genealogical Society
$16,600 over six months to catalogue the library collection of the Halton-Peel Genealogical Society. This exercise will make information more accessible and encourage the public to learn more about their community and family history.
PARDners: Partners for Accessible Recreational Docking c/o CharterAbility Cruising for the Disabled Inc
$99,000 over one year to create an accessible docking facility and waterside park in Oakville. This adaptive and senior-friendly area will promote water-sport and recreational activities for community members of all abilities.
La Passerelle (Centre des Jeunes Francophones de Toronto)
$55,000 over two years to organize a job fair in Mississauga that will help increase career opportunities for Francophone students in non-traditional trades. (An additional grant of $75,000 to Toronto will support this activity.)
Peace Ranch
$171,200 over three years to produce marketing materials and hire a fundraising and outreach officer. The organization will then be able to raise funds and expand programs to better service clients with severe mental illnesses in the Region of Peel.
Peel Partners for a Drug-Free Community
$12,300 over one year to purchase computer equipment and a projector. Upgrades will support the organization's drug awareness and education program, which is delivered to thousands of schoolchildren and their parents in the Region of Peel.
Polish-Canadian Vocal Group Inc.
$7,000 over one year to purchase cultural displays, brochures and costumes, which will enable the group to create a more vibrant display of Polish cultural heritage at the 2008 Carassauga festival in Mississauga.
Royal Canadian Legion Burlington Branch #60
$75,000 over one year to install a modern, fuel-efficient heating and ventilation system that will reduce costs, improve comfort and enhance this popular meeting place for Legion and other community members in Burlington.
Square One Older Adult Centre
$137,700 over two years to conduct outreach and marketing activities. Mississauga's older adult community will be encouraged to participate in the centre's activities and increased support for its expanding operation will be generated.
Sri Lankan-Canadian Community Services
$210,000 over three years for operating support to help establish and develop the capacity of this emerging organization. Sri Lankan Canadians residing in the Region of Peel will benefit from the better delivery of needed programs and services.
Sustainable Halton Hills c/o Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources
$150,000 over two years to help establish the Sustainable Halton Hills centre. This organization will develop a shared facility for environmental and local community-based groups that aim and work to advance sustainable community development.
Terra Cotta Community Centre
$100,000 over one year for structural reinforcements and the construction of a basement under the historic Terra Cotta Community Centre. The centre’s safety will improve and the facility will be preserved for continued use by the community.
Youth Arts Against Violence c/o Rapport Youth and Family Services
$224,200 over three years to support the development of leadership skills in youth through a youth arts initiative in the Region of Peel that promotes non-violence.
