Community Groups in Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming Receive More Than $798,000 in Grants from The Ontario Trillium Foundation
North Bay, April 7, 2008 – Community organizations in Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming districts will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that many of the 22 grants totalling $798,300 will help organizations enhance community spaces. Funding will improve accessibility and comfort, increase energy efficiency or be used for innovative technology.
“Our government is committed to fostering healthy and vibrant communities, right across Ontario,” said Minister Carroll. “These Ontario Trillium Foundation grants will help build a stronger province by fuelling local economies and improving the quality of life of Ontarians.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is one of the few funders of capital improvements for Ontario’s not-for-profit sector. OTF, through the Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming Grant Review Team and its Vice-Chair Lois Cookman, has listened to community groups when they have told us how much they value our capital grants, and we continue to recognize the importance of these grants.
The Corporation of the Town of Cobalt will receive $65,200 over six months to replace ice-making equipment at the Father Les Costello Memorial Arena. Ice quality will improve, making the facility a more enjoyable community space for people of all ages to participate in a variety of sport activities.
Jocko Beaucage Community Services will be awarded $13,300 over one year to replace the steam table and tables and chairs at its busy community centre, where local residents, including seniors, volunteer and engage in a number of social and recreational activities.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Ontario's 2008 spring budget boosted the Foundation's annual funding to $110 million from $105 million, which will be further increased to $120 million by 2009-2010.
The Community grants listed below were ratified on March 6, 2008.
Arts Council Muskoka
$31,000 over one year to increase and sustain a healthy arts community through increased memberships, new partnerships and long-term funding strategies. Networking, skill development and marketing opportunities for local artists will be improved.
Baysville Compressor Connection Project c/o Township of Lake of Bays
$42,400 over six months to twin ice-making services at both the Baysville Arena and the Baysville Curling Club facilities. This will help maximize efficiency and ensure consistent ice conditions, providing better recreation and sport programming.
City of Temiskaming Shores
$14,500 over one year to implement the Senior Respectful program at the Temiskaming Shores Public Library. French and English book collections will expand and an outreach program will be delivered to seniors in assisted-living residences.
The Corporation of Coleman Township
$10,400 over one year to install a covered concrete sidewalk, automatic doors and to modify the washroom. This will make the community hall a more accessible recreation facility for local citizens of all ages and abilities.
Corporation of the Municipality of Calvin
$11,500 over one year to install a gazebo/bandshell on the community centre grounds. This will create more opportunities for people of all ages to gather and participate in a wider range of social and recreational activities.
The Corporation of the Town of Cobalt

$75,000 over one year to replace the arena boards, glass and gates at the community centre in Astorville, making it a safer venue for local and area citizens to engage in a variety of sport and recreation activities.
Corporation of the Township of James
$55,000 over one year to renovate the outdoor skating rink in Elk Lake, making it a safer four-season, multi-use recreation facility for local citizens of all ages to enjoy.
Greening Nipissing / Ecologisation Nipissing
$56,800 over two years to increase understanding and awareness of the natural environment and protection of ecosystem health by delivering an environmental education program to Grade 5 students and community groups in Nipissing-East Parry Sound.

The Local Services Board of Britt-Byng Inlet
$8,200 over one year to commemorate the 140th Anniversary of the founding of Britt-Byng Inlet through a series of events and activities that will attract the participation of local residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.
Mahingan Development Corporation
$75,000 over one year to implement Algonquin cultural interpretive services at the organization’s Long Sault Island facility. An interactive kiosk will serve to promote the Algonquin Nation's historical contribution to the local area.
Mattawa Bonfield Economic Development Corporation
$60,000 over six months toward the start-up cost of the Mattawa Creative Centre, a small apparel manufacturing plant, professional development studio and skills development program targeting local Aboriginal women of all ages.
Moon River Property Owners' Association
$15,800 over one year for the development of the Moon River Stewardship Plan, which will identify ways for the community at-large and key stakeholders to protect the natural environment and celebrate built-heritage along the river.
Muskoka CBSM Organization Group c/o Muskoka Heritage Foundation
$18,000 over one year to host a two-day workshop for local not-for-profit groups and municipalities. This will help increase knowledge about community-based social marketing programs to encourage environmentally sensitive behavioural change.
Nipissing Association for Disabled Youth
$24,300 over one year to enhance and improve the quality of life for more adults with developmental disabilities by increasing participation in the PADDLE (Providing Adults with Developmental Disabilities Lifelong Education) program.
Nipissing District Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society c/o Ontario Genealogical Society
$14,000 over one year to support the work of the North Bay branch's volunteers through the acquisition of a microfilm reader, printer, laptop and projector.
Parry Sound Area Big Brothers & Big Sisters Inc.
$92,200 over three years for staff and resources to create greater community awareness of the local organization, recruit more active volunteers and expand the in-school mentoring program to serve a greater number of children and youth.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 424
$40,700 over one year to obtain an energy-efficient heating and air conditioning system for the hall located in Bala. A more comfortable place for people of all ages to gather for social and recreational activities will then be provided.
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 445
$15,000 over one year to replace the hall’s tables, chairs and ceiling tiles, making it a safer, more comfortable space for people of all ages from Callander and area to gather and participate in a variety of social and recreational activities.
SAVOUR Muskoka
$30,000 over one year to undertake a marketing campaign that will increase community and industry awareness and support for locally grown and produced products, and encourage greater participation in culinary tourism.
Sixteen Community Groups in Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming Will Receive More than $529.000 in Grants
North Bay, December 3, 2007 - Community organizations in Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that funding totalling $549,900 will help 16 organizations meet local needs in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
“For 25 years, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has built healthy and vibrant communities, one community organization at a time,” said Minister Carroll. “Ontarians live better lives today because of the good things community organizations do in their communities.”
OTF, through the work of the Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming Grant Review Team and its Chair Christina Golding, is investing in the charitable and not-for-profit sector. This funding plays a tremendous role in financing improvements to community facilities and helping organizations build their capacity, train volunteers and expand their programs.
In Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound and Timiskaming areas, OTF grants make a difference.
Near North Heritage Group c/o Township of Nipissing will receive $99,700 over 18 months to support the organization's capacity to promote area heritage and culture through a series of collaborative marketing initiatives, planning sessions and special events. North Bay Apollo Gymnastics Club will be awarded $48,900 over one year to improve accessibility, safety and programming by installing portable ramps, a new gym floor and new equipment that meets provincial standards and increases opportunities to host provincial events.
OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues.

2009 Temiskaming International Plowing Match
$26,500 over one year to carry out a training and recognition program for over 1,000 volunteers who, in September 2009, will be involved in hosting Northern Ontario's first International Plowing Match.

$54,000 over 18 months to rebuild the boardwalks at the Sturgeon River House Museum, making them safer and more accessible to all citizens of West Nipissing, including people with disabilities.
Big Sisters Association of North Bay and District
$39,900 over one year to attract new volunteers and renovate the premises, making them safer and more accessible for volunteers and Little Sisters to gather and participate in a variety of programs and activities.
Club de l'âge d'or de Field
$24,500 over one year to carry out renovations to the organization's newly acquired facility, making it an accessible community space for seniors to gather, socialize and engage in a variety of recreational activities.
The Corporation of the Town of Kearney
$31,000 over one year to renovate the existing washrooms and create a barrier-free universal washroom at the community centre, making it a cleaner, more accessible recreation facility for all citizens and visitors to enjoy.
Dokis First Nation
$14,400 over one year to carry out renovations to the library, making it a more fully accessible, safer and well-insulated community space for all residents to enjoy.
Dwight Lakeview Seniors Association
$48,000 over one year to renovate the organization’s kitchen facilities, making the centre more accessible for members and the community at large to gather and use for recreational and social purposes.
Huntsville Suzuki School of Music
$6,300 over one year to equip the school with a piano so that it can continue to offer and expand its piano instruction program to children and youth, promoting culture and artistic activity in the community.
Kaleidoscope Arts in Education c/o Muskoka Lakes Music Festival
$53,000 over one year to enrich student and community-based learning experiences by linking schools and children with professional artists to deliver arts-based education programs.

$27,700 over one year for equipment upgrades and repairs to the Gravenhurst Scout Hall, improving energy efficiency and making it a cleaner, more accessible community space for all participants.
Strong Agricultural Society
$5,400 over one year to install a generator and upgrade the Sheep Shed building's lighting and wiring systems. These improvements will better showcase local heritage pieces and help promote agricultural history to the community.
Town of Huntsville
$31,400 over one year to carry out renovations at the Stephenson Community Hall in Utterson, making it a safer, more accessible community space for all local citizens to meet and enjoy recreational and social activities.
Town of Kirkland Lake
$30,500 over one year to install rubber surfacing in the playground area, making it more accessible to children with physical challenges and safer for all users.

$54,600 over two years to help the organization build its fundraising and organizational capacity as it prepares to establish a Francophone community arts and cultural centre in Sturgeon Falls.
Centre Communautaire de Lavigne Community Centre
$15,000 over one year for a propane generator for the community hall, which is the area’s designated emergency-preparedness and relief centre. This will help ensure there is a comfortable and safe haven for residents in case of disaster or emergency.
Classic Theatre Cobalt
$3,600 over one year to purchase and install equipment and make renovations to the theatre that will help extend the life of its grand piano. Stage space will be freed up, enabling a wider range of performing arts groups to be accommodated.
Corporation of the Town of Latchford
$13,300 over one year to carry out renovations to the library, seniors centre, hallway and washroom areas of the Fred Keenan Centre. Improvements will help the facility continue to offer a variety of learning and leisure activities for all citizens.
Corporation of the Town of Parry Sound
$49,300 over eight months toward the cost of hosting the 2007 World Enduro Championships. This event will increase visits to the area and generate an economic impact of approximately $700,000.
Corporation of the Township of Gauthier
$14,700 over six months to improve the quality and range of affordable fitness activities available to local residents. New sports equipment will be purchased, fencing installed and a new gym program introduced.
Corporation of the Village of Sundridge
$15,000 over one year to carry out renovations to the community bandshell, making it a safer public space for local residents to gather and participate in a variety of events.
Literacy Alliance of West Nipissing
$15,000 over one year toward the purchase of new computer laboratory and media centre equipment. This will improve learning conditions for all participants as well as the delivery of off-site workshops and presentations.
Mattawa Child Care Centre
$15,000 over one year to install a heat-recovery ventilation unit. This equipment will improve air quality and provide a safer daycare environment for participating children as well as their caregivers.
Municipalité de Casey
$16,900 over one year to upgrade fixtures and furniture at the community hall located in the basement of Eglise de Belle Vallée. Local citizens will then be able to continue participating in a variety of recreational and social events.
Muskoka Inventory Group c/o Muskoka Heritage Foundation
$113,800 over two years to support the development of the aquatic component of the Muskoka Watershed Inventory. The initiative will inform partners and the general public about action required to protect the district's rich natural heritage.
Phelps Community Recreation Committee
$54,000 over one year for materials and services to renovate the outdoor rink. These will improve the skating area and increase the community's use of the facility by making it available for skateboarders and outdoor dances in the summer months.
Rotary Farr Park Soccer Field c/o The Corporation of the City of Temiskaming Shores
$47,000 over one year to respond to increased local participation in soccer. In partnership with the Tri Town Soccer Club, a regulation-size soccer field will be developed for community-wide use at Rotary Farr Park in Haileybury.
Township of Lake of Bays
$30,000 over six months toward the purchase of an ice resurfacer for the Baysville Arena. This will improve the quality of ice available at the arena, which is used by local citizens and area hockey and skate organizations.
West Parry Sound District Museum
$11,800 over one year to upgrade computer and presentation equipment in order to support the day-to-day operations of the museum and enable it to provide better service to the community. |
