Community Groups in Quinte, Kingston and Rideau Receive More Than $1.3 Million in Grants from the Ontario Trillium Foundation
Kingston, April 7, 2008 – Community organizations in Quinte, Kingston and Rideau will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that many of the 37 grants totalling $1,313,900 will help organizations enhance community spaces. Funding will improve accessibility and comfort, increase energy efficiency or be used for innovative technology.
“Our government is committed to fostering healthy and vibrant communities, right across Ontario,” said Minister Carroll. “These Ontario Trillium Foundation grants will help build a stronger province by fuelling local economies and improving the quality of life of Ontarians.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is one of the few funders of capital improvements for Ontario’s not-for-profit sector. OTF, through the Quinte, Kingston and Rideau Grant Review Team and its Chair John McDougall, has listened to community groups when they have told us how much they value our capital grants, and we continue to recognize the importance of these grants. The County of Lennox and Addington will receive $75,000 over one year to establish teen centres in 10 public libraries serving rural communities in southern Lennox and Addington, including the purchase of equipment, furnishings and resources. Two teen advisory committees will guide the project. The Kiwanis Club of Belleville will be awarded $75,000 over one year to build an accessible skate park facility in West Riverside Park, providing opportunities for area children and youth to skateboard, bike and roller blade.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Ontario's 2008 spring budget boosted the Foundation's annual funding to $110 million from $105 million, which will be further increased to $120 million by 2009-2010.
The Community grants listed below were ratified on March 6, 2008.
Active Seniors Koalition c/o North Lanark Community Health Centre $5,000 over one year to develop two regulation-size shuffleboard courts that will provide a local and affordable physical and recreational activity for seniors at the Watson's Comers Community Centre.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, Inc. $7,000 over one year to purchase new signage and display systems to help the community better understand the services being offered and the volunteer needs of this newly amalgamated organization.
Brockville Concert Association $10,000 over two years to establish a series of jazz concerts that will feature Canadian artists at Brockville heritage sites and make them a permanent feature of the annual jazz festival.
Canada DanceSport Community Organization Inc. $32,800 over one year to host the 2008 Canada DanceSport Tournament in Kingston in September 2008. The event will offer wheelchair dance workshops and competitions and increase community and educational dance activities in the Kingston area.
Carleton Place Water Dragons (CPWD) $34,300 over one year to purchase new equipment that will enhance the swim program, provide training for coaches and allow the club to hold two skills-and-fitness training camps.
Celebrate Youth Movement c/o North Hastings Community Integration Association $34,800 over two years to engage youth aged 11 to 22 years in discussing their concerns and ideas for improving life for North Hastings youth. A youth-driven community action plan and three improvement projects of concern to youth will be completed.
Corporation of the Municipality of North Grenville $15,000 over one year to purchase new large-print and arts books for the North Grenville Library system and develop a new collection of literary and educational DVDs.
The Corporation of the Town of Carleton Place $4,000 over one year to improve community access to information at the library through the installation of wireless Internet connections and the purchase of two complete computer stations.
Corporation of the Township of Lanark Highlands $70,000 over one year to provide enhancements to the newly relocated Tatlock Community Hall, making it a safer and more accessible space for community groups to meet.
County of Lennox & Addington $75,000 over one year to establish teen centres in 10 public libraries serving rural communities in southern Lennox and Addington, including the purchase of equipment, furnishings and resources. Two teen advisory committees will guide the project.
Cycle Kingston $26,000 over one year to build the capacity of the organization to offer new cycling training and awareness programs in the Kingston area. These will encourage more people of all ages to cycle, resulting in both health and environmental benefits.
Experience Summer c/o North Hastings Community Integration Association $77,200 over three years to offer a free, integrated day-camp program to 200 children aged 5 to 13 years each summer. A new counsellor-in-training program will also be offered to provide leadership training and jobs to six local youths.
The Festival Players of Prince Edward County Inc. $18,000 over one year to offer a three-week season of professional theatre in the summer of 2008. The festival will feature four contemporary Canadian and international plays and offer a seven-week youth mentorship program to eight local youths.
Food for All Food Bank Serving South Grenville Area Inc. $84,600 over three years to increase the organization's capacity to deliver efficient, quality food services to the people of Prescott, Edwardsburgh/Cardinal and Augusta. Harp of Tara Branch Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann $12,300 over two years to strengthen the presence of this Kingston-area cultural organization by purchasing sound equipment and educational materials, increasing advertising and enhancing community workshops. Kanyen'keha Language Nest Initiative c/o Tsi Tyonnheht Onkwawenna $34,500 over 15 months to offer the Kanyen'keha Language Nest Initiative, a Mohawk language-immersion pilot program for children from birth to six years and their parents or caregivers on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Kingston Aeros Trampoline Club $15,000 over one year to improve the capacity of this club to deliver safer, better-quality trampolining by purchasing a new floor and jumping equipment.
Kingston Impact Basketball Club c/o Ontario Basketball Association $10,400 over one year to purchase 10 shot clocks that will be used by the club to support the implementation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) rules.
Kiwanis Club of Belleville $75,000 over one year to build an accessible skate park facility in West Riverside Park in Belleville, providing opportunities for area children and youth to skateboard, bike and roller blade.
Lakeland Alliance c/o Peterborough Green-Up Association $10,000 over three years to educate shoreline property owners, municipalities, realtors and marina owners about lake stewardship in the Kawartha Lake watershed. Another OTF grant will support this activity.
Maggie's Resource Centre of North Hastings $80,000 over two years to help offer the Young Women Thriving Violence Prevention Program to more than 60 young girls and women at risk aged 11 to 18 years in the Bancroft and rural North Hastings areas.
Martha's Table Community Program $77,800 over one year to construct a fully accessible washroom at the new Princess Street location of Martha's Table. The renovations will improve accessibility for people who are economically challenged in Kingston.
Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust Conservancy $25,000 over one year to launch this organization and build its capacity to promote the protection and preservation of land through membership development and marketing. Municipality of Centre Hastings $12,000 over one year to purchase six new computers and related software for the public library in Madoc, enabling it to offer expanded computer and high-speed Internet access to residents of Centre Hastings.
Municipality of Centre Hastings $78,400 over one year to build a splash pad in the Madoc Skate Park so it can offer a free and accessible outdoor summer recreation facility for local children and youth and their families.
Municipality of Hastings Highlands $15,000 over one year to help obtain new books and resources for emergent readers, adults and seniors. New shelving and furnishings will also be purchased for the public library in Maynooth, benefiting the 4,000 rural residents of Hastings Highlands.
Museum of Health Care at Kingston $58,400 over one year to increase awareness of the history of health care by preparing and opening a permanent gallery devoted to the history of nursing in Canada. Northern Frontenac Community Services $60,600 over 18 months to create youth volunteerism opportunities and expand recreation programs and activities for youth aged 10 to 15 years throughout rural North, Central and South Frontenac.
Pakenham Fiddle and Stepdance Association Inc. $25,000 over one year for part-time staff, promotion and materials. These will help to build the sustainability of this local cultural event for people of all ages and increase the level of community involvement.
Perth and District Food Bank $18,500 over one year to enhance the food bank's capacity to deliver services and increase its volunteer base through strategic planning activities. Prince Edward County Arts Council $52,100 over two years to strengthen the organization's capacity to promote arts and culture in Prince Edward County. Community arts programs and events will be expanded, volunteer management improved and community partnerships strengthened.
Smiths Falls Curling and Squash Club $13,100 over one year to reduce energy costs by installing energy-efficient lighting in the arena portion of the club. This will also improve visibility and make the facility more attractive to curlers and other community groups that use it.
Southeast Region Children's Mental Health Education and De-Stigmatization Project c/o Children's Mental Health Services $60,000 over six months toward a public education project that raises awareness of mental health issues and available support services among children and youth across rural and underserved communities in Southeastern Ontario.
St. Lawrence Shakespeare Theatrical Company $42,300 over two years to provide administrative assistance that will help increase the organizational capacity of this community festival in Prescott. Thousand Islands Playhouse $15,000 over one year to improve organizational efficiency by updating the ticket system at the Thousand Island Playhouse with the purchase and installation of new software and hardware.
Trillium School of Gymnastics $15,000 over one year to obtain safe, current and standardized equipment that will reduce the risk of injuries and help the organization offer quality and diverse gymnastics programs to the Kingston community.
Wilton Women's Institute c/o Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario $14,800 over one year to equip the new kitchen facility in the Wilton Women's Institute Hall, which will improve the facilities so they may better serve the residents of the village of Wilton and the surrounding rural area.
Forty Community Groups in Quinte, Kingston and Rideau Receive More Than $1.3 Million in Grants
Kingston, December 3, 2007 - Community organizations in Quinte, Kingston and Rideau will benefit from grants recently ratified by the Board of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Ontario Minister of Culture Aileen Carroll noted that funding totalling $1,317,400 will help 40 organizations meet local needs in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
“For 25 years, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has built healthy and vibrant communities, one community organization at a time,” said Minister Carroll. “Ontarians live better lives today because of the good things community organizations do in their communities.”
OTF, through the work of the Quinte, Kingston and Rideau Grant Review Team and its Chair John McDougall, is investing in the charitable and not-for-profit sector. This funding plays a tremendous role in financing improvements to community facilities and helping organizations build their capacity, train volunteers and expand their programs.
In Quinte, Kingston and Rideau, OTF grants make a difference. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County will receive $115,000 over three years to provide more children in Lanark County with traditional mentoring partnerships and to help the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency engage in long-term planning. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 491 Seeleys Bay will be awarded $69,100 over one year to make the entrance, washrooms and flooring in the facility more accessible to all members of the community. This will improve safety and enable greater use of the building for meetings and recreation.
OTF is an agency of the Government of Ontario. Its annual funding was boosted to $105 million from $100 million in 2007 and will be further increased to $120 million in 2009-2010. This enhanced funding has resulted in an increase to the maximum amount available for capital grants and the creation of a $2 million Future Fund, which will focus this year on strengthening the impact of organizations working on environmental issues.

Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada #378 $50,000 over one year to make electrical upgrades to the organization’s hall in Maynooth, helping to improve safety and enhance its use by the community.
Bancroft Community Lunch Program $20,000 over 15 months to improve and expand a free nutritious lunch program serving over 185 primarily low-income community residents in the Bancroft area each week.
Bancroft Seniors Club c/o United Seniors Citizens of Ontario $14,100 over one year to purchase new furniture, kitchen appliances and a wireless microphone system for the Bancroft Seniors Club’s 580 club house. Upgrades will help improve access and enjoyment of this well-used community facility.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County $115,000 over three years to provide more children in Lanark County with traditional mentoring partnerships and to help the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency engage in long-term planning.
Brockville & Area Community Living Association $46,700 over one year to help the association enhance the social, emotional and physical well-being of people with intellectual and other disabilities by purchasing and installing Snoezelen Room equipment especially designed to assist them.
Centre social et culturel Frontenac $43,300 over one year to install energy-efficient lighting throughout this Kingston centre, purchase tables and chairs for the theatre, and hire a communications officer to develop and implement a plan that will enhance programming.
Child & Youth Wellness Centre of Leeds & Grenville $10,400 over one year to maintain community-based mental health services for children, youth and their families in the Gananoque area by repairing deteriorated brickwork at Sampson House where youth services are provided.
Cloyne and District Historical Society $27,200 over two years to improve accessibility to historical information by archiving holdings belonging to this historical society. Funds will also help to research and revise information for its fifth publication of local history.
The Corporation of the Village of Merrickville-Wolford $47,200 over one year to purchase materials and equipment. This will facilitate the expansion and enhancement of resources and services offered by the Merrickville-Wolford Public Library to the surrounding community.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Treatment and Education Centre Inc. $25,000 over one year to expand programs and services to people with FASD in the Belleville area, offer educational workshops to service providers and hold community prevention programs.
Friends of the Kingston Blue Marlins Swim Club $19,900 over two years to build the organizational capacity of the swim club by developing a comprehensive guide for parent volunteers and improving communications. Coaches will then be better able to focus on the skill development of swimmers.
The Glenwood Cemetery Company $24,800 over one year toward restoring, cataloguing and computerizing historical burial records for the Picton area and improving public access to the information.
Habitat for Humanity Greater Kingston & Frontenac $44,900 over two years to enhance the capacity of the organization by hiring a volunteer co-ordinator to manage its volunteer resources and applicant expectations.
Hastings Prince Edward Land Trust (HPELT) $30,800 over one year to help raise funds and enlist public support for the creation and protection of the McMahon Bluff Nature Reserve, a 97-hectare nature reserve and a home to endangered species in Prince Edward County.
Hospice Lennox and Addington $40,700 over two years to establish a children's bereavement program that supports children dealing with loss in southern Lennox and Addington County. A fundraising feasibility study for the organization will also be completed.
Independent Living Centre Kingston $71,900 over two years to enhance the economic potential of people with disabilities in the Kingston area. Partnerships will be developed with employers and employment-service providers, helping to increase employability for individuals.
Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services Inc. $15,000 over one year to help purchase a new freezer, furnishings and equipment for the organization’s new facilities. The upgrades will help furnish space for program delivery and improve community care services to Lennox and Addington seniors.
Madoc Nursery School and Daycare $24,000 over one year toward building repairs and improvements for the facility, enabling greater use of it by the community and better access to childcare and children's services in Centre Hastings.
Mossaaiic Connections $10,000 over one year toward Socks for Stalks, a cultural and health-promotion program for adults and youth. It offers community workshops on traditional Aboriginal horticultural practices and helps to restore indigenous plants in the Stirling area.
Napanee District Community Foundation $20,000 over one year to enhance the organization's capacity to improve fund development, awareness and grant making for the benefit of Lennox and Addington charities and residents. The Youth and Philanthropy Program will also be expanded.
North Frontenac Little Theatre $15,000 over one year for a new roof and electrical upgrades to the North Frontenac Little Theatre Hall in Tichborne, making it more functional, accessible and safer for theatre and community use.
North Grenville Curling Club $23,200 to purchase proper-sized stones for youth curlers and an ice scraper to enhance the quality of the ice surface for the enjoyment of all curlers in the community.
Pakenham Curling Club $12,700 over one year to purchase equipment that will improve ice conditions and play, enhance safety and provide a safer kitchen area. These upgrades will help to maintain membership and attract newcomers to the sport.
Prevention Awareness for Life $50,000 over one year to develop an age-appropriate and youth-focused assessment tool for substance abuse. Screening and assessment services will also be provided for youth aged 12 to 18 years with concurrent issues in the Kingston area.
Prince Edward Fitness & Aquatic Centre (PEFAC) $14,600 over one year to purchase 10 stationary bikes, which will help expand physical fitness programming to youth, adults and seniors in Prince Edward County.
Prince Edward Learning Centre $15,000 over one year to help purchase new furniture and equipment, improving classroom facilities and resources available to adult-literacy learners attending programs at the centre in Picton.
Prince Edward/ Lennox & Addington Community Futures Development Corporation $50,000 over one year for research, idea exchange and policies to support economic development in rural Prince Edward, Lennox and Addington counties. Funds will also help to host the Eastern Ontario Rural Economic Development Conference in May 2008.
Quinte Branch of The Ontario Genealogical Society c/o The Ontario Genealogical Society $12,700 over one year to purchase a digital microfilm reader-scanner and related equipment to better store and provide access to Quinte-area community and family history.
Quinte Tennis Club Belleville $28,000 over one year to repair playing surfaces, improve lighting and watering systems and update equipment. Upgrades will help provide affordable tennis instruction and greater opportunities to play and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 491 Seeleys Bay $69,100 over one year to make the entrance, washrooms and flooring in the facility more accessible to all members of the community. This will improve safety and enable greater use of the building for meetings and recreation.
Shannonville Agricultural Society $15,000 over one year to purchase new bleachers for the fairgrounds in Tyendinaga Township. These will accommodate an additional 500 people attending the annual agricultural fair, sports and recreational events.
Smiths Falls and District Club for Youth $29,600 over one year to hire a program co-ordinator who will work with and mentor youth in Smiths Falls and area, helping them to develop job-readiness skills.
Smiths Falls Girls Hockey Association $25,000 over two years to purchase equipment and provide skills development training for coaches and players.
St. Lawrence Speed Skating Club c/o Ontario Speed Skating Association $25,000 over one year to improve the club’s capacity to deliver a quality speed skating experience to people of all ages and abilities in the St. Lawrence Seaway region. Equipment will be purchased and community and regional awareness increased.
Thousand Islands Habitat for Humanity $25,000 over one year to undertake planning that will increase the long-term capacity of the organization to manage programs and operate its business and ReStore facility.
Township of Addington Highlands $15,000 over one year to purchase new large-print books, DVDs, and children's books and bookbags for the Flinton and Denbigh libraries. A new accessible entrance for the Denbigh Library will also be constructed.
Township of Limerick $14,800 over one year to help construct a new outdoor playground at the Limerick Community Centre, offering new recreation opportunities to children aged 2 to 12 years.
Volunteer and Information Quinte $47,300 over two years to improve services and resources that will help Hastings and Prince Edward not-for-profit organizations recruit and manage volunteers and provide them with meaningful and satisfying volunteer experiences.
Volunteer Bureau of Leeds & Grenville $74,500 over two years to develop volunteer clubs in Leeds Grenville for children and youth, helping them to develop a better appreciation and understanding of the value of volunteering.
Youth Action Kommittee of Perth and District $55,000 over two years to increase engagement opportunities for rural children and youth aged 12 to 18 years by hiring a program director who will also enhance the organizational capacity of the agency.

608 'Duke of Edinburgh' Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron $15,000 over one year toward the purchase of musical instruments and uniforms that will help equip the squadron's pipe-and-drum band and benefit young people in the Belleville area.
Belleville Youth Swim Team $15,000 over six months toward hosting the first annual Belleville Youth Swim Team meet in Trenton in October 2007. The event will host 350 swimmers from throughout the region with the support of 100 volunteers.
Cherry Valley and District Lion's Club $8,100 over one year to build a gazebo in the public park, which will provide a shelter, improve the facilities and encourage a broader range of outdoor activities and greater use by the community.
Connect Youth $145,200 over three years to provide a safe opportunity for rural youth in South Grenville to receive support, assistance, services and access to resources concerning health and social issues.
The Corporation of the Village of Westport $35,000 over one year to enhance the ability of the Village of Westport Library to serve the community by expanding its holdings and improving building efficiency. Eastern Zone Children's Aid Society c/o Children's Aid Society of Ottawa $50,000 over one year to develop and implement a comprehensive social-marketing campaign throughout Eastern Ontario. It will highlight the importance of reaching out to children and encourage families to commit to foster caring and adoption. (Additional grants of $50,000 to Champlain area and $50,000 to Durham, Haliburton, Kawartha and Pine Ridge area will support this activity.)
Festival of the Islands Inc. $15,000 over one year to improve efficiency and community involvement by purchasing security fencing and a storage trailer. These improvements will make the festival’s tent, stage and equipment more accessible for other groups in the Gananoque area.
Flinton Recreation Club $25,000 over two years toward hosting the Annual Jamboree. This will offer a weekend of live entertainment and festivities in August 2007 and 2008, attracting over 1,000 visitors to the hamlet of Flinton.
Franco-Phare $30,000 over one year to support Quinte’s Francophone community and increase the organization’s visibility. A permanent location will be secured, a co-ordinator hired, an outreach and fundraising plan developed, and volunteer involvement increased.
Greater Napanee Gymnastics Club $15,000 over one year toward new equipment that will provide better opportunities for gymnastics training and participation to over 400 local girls and boys. The boys’ gymnastics program will be enhanced, resulting in increased participation.
Kingston Family YMCA $50,000 over one year to assist with converting the existing swimming pool into a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool, addressing special needs programming for children with disabilities, seniors and adults with chronic pain.
Kingston Ringette Association c/o Ontario Ringette Association $25,000 over two years to improve skills development and increase opportunities in Kingston and area for children and volunteers to participate in the sport of ringette.
Lanark Transportation Association $35,000 over six months to replace the current van with a new vehicle that is fitted with a wheelchair lift. The association will be able to continue providing accessible, affordable transportation service to residents of all abilities in the area.
Lansdowne Agricultural Society $15,000 over one year toward the construction of an additional show ring at the Lansdowne Fair Grounds. It will increase the number of events and participants, and enhance audience interest in the annual fair.
Lennox Community Theatre $15,000 over one year toward a new roof and related repairs to this well-used community theatre serving the rural Napanee area.
The Merrickville and District Historical Society $25,000 over three years to preserve, photograph and digitize fragile and historically significant archive materials. The information will also be featured in English and French on the Merrickville and District Historical Society's website.
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte $92,000 over two years to establish a community fitness and resource centre. Access to physical fitness programs and support services will then be improved for people of all ages at the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
Municipality of Hastings Highlands $15,000 over one year toward repairs of the ball diamonds, soccer fields and outdoor rink at the Herschel Recreation Complex. Accessibility to safe and enjoyable sports activities will then improve for 4,000 community residents.
Napanee and District Curling Club $24,000 over one year toward equipment repairs and improvements that will ensure the continued safe operation of the curling rink, which serves the greater Napanee community.
North Frontenac Community Arena $47,600 over one year to undertake renovations that will improve accessibility and privacy for women, girls and people with disabilities in this 30-year-old community facility. North Hastings Community Trust $2,200 over one year to purchase a computer and office equipment, which will enable the organization to more efficiently serve low-income area residents in need of financial aid.
Rideau Canal Museum $24,400 to complete a feasibility study that will put forward recommendations pertaining to this Smith Falls museum’s exhibitions, programs, space and equipment needs as it determines its direction for the future.
Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) $20,000 over one year to obtain a co-ordinator, who will help improve the organization’s capacity as it grows to meet increased community demand for environmental programming in the Smiths Falls area.
Rideau Friendship Circle # 541 c/o The United Senior Citizens of Ontario $10,100 to purchase new upgraded kitchen equipment for the North Crosby Community Hall. This will improve its safety and reliability for seniors and others who use the hall for social, educational and health activities, and meetings and celebrations.
Township of Carlow/Mayo $58,500 over one year for renovations to the Hermon Public Library in the local public school. A new accessible washroom and entrance will be built, enabling greater access and learning opportunities for over 770 township residents of all abilities.
Township of Stirling-Rawdon $24,200 over one year toward an accessible entrance and new computers, software and books for the public library. These will improve library services for 4,500 residents of all abilities in Stirling-Rawdon.
Township of Stirling-Rawdon $37,800 over one year toward renovations and accessibility improvements to the historic 1879 Grand Trunk Railway Station in Stirling. A new accessible community meeting room, railway heritage centre and information centre will be created.
Upper Canada Swim Club $6,700 over two years to introduce more children to swimming as a lifetime activity by establishing a fun, competitive summer swim program for children aged six to 14 years in the Brockville area.
Verona Lions Club $75,000 over one year to sustain and increase community use of the Verona Lions Hall. Upgrades will be made to the heating and cooling system, summer kitchen and kitchen.
Volunteer & Information Kingston $37,200 to enhance the delivery of community services by the not-for-profit sector. An affordable and accessible space in downtown Kingston will be created, where volunteers and organizations can gather for training, education and meeting purposes.
Wolfe Island Early Years Drop In Centre (WIEYDIC) Inc. $48,600 over three years to enhance the development of volunteers connected with the Wolfe Island Early Years Drop In Centre. Opportunities to increase skills and knowledge about a variety of relevant topics will be identified and offered. |
