At the Heart of Community Life in Opasatika
In Opasatika, all roads lead to the community hall! In this small town, 200 kilometres northwest of Timmins, a single meeting place serves many functions: it hosts the firefighters’ Christmas dinner, Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day breakfasts, biweekly bingo, meetings of the Franco-Ontarian Women’s Cultural Union, student fundraising activities, receptions for the hiking club and the hunting and fishing club, and meetings of the carnival committee.
Thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant of $23,500, the hall now boasts a modern, functional kitchen that can accommodate large groups.
"Our community hall really serves the needs of all our social groups, and so we’re delighted to have a kitchen that will make it more welcoming," explains Denis Dorval, a member of the Opasatika economic regional development committee. Now, even more people can take part in the community life that thrives within these walls. |
