How far would you go for OTF?

Read one volunteer’s story about getting home to the remote fly-in First Nation community of Sandy Lake after her first OTF event in Toronto.

In Margaret Fiddler’s words:

My introduction to the OTF scene was the wonderful conference in November 2005. The trip home was atypical but not unusual.  I left Toronto Saturday afternoon and arrived in Thunder Bay Saturday evening.  On Sunday morning, I headed out for the last leg of the trip. Unfortunately the weather was "out" in Sandy Lake but we did not know that until we arrived and flew over the community, as it sometimes happens.

Rather than spend overnight in Winnipeg, where the plane ended up, I chose to come back and spend Sunday night in Sioux Lookout because I have a daughter there. So, on Sunday, I actually flew from Thunder Bay to Sioux Lookout to Red Lake to Pikangikum to Deer Lake to Sandy Lake to Winnipeg to Pikangikum to Red Lake to Sioux Lookout. By then, flights were full for the next day so I actually arrived home at 7 p.m. Monday night.  I think this is called OTF dedication.

When we asked Margaret Fiddler for a photo of herself to accompany this story, she sent us this lovely picture that included her husband, children and grandchildren
When we asked Margaret Fiddler for a photo of herself to accompany this story, she sent us this lovely picture that included her husband, children and grandchildren.  She says, "I don’t have a photo of just me.  I am not “just me.”  I am my family and this community that has so kindly adopted me."  In case you're wondering, Margaret is seated second from the right.
