Music To Their Ears
All weekend long, music fans were singing to the tune of $69,000, thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Hon. David H. Tsubouchi, Minister of Culture and MPP for Markham, joined York-Simcoe Grant Review Team chair Anne Pegg at opening ceremonies to celebrate with festival organizers.
"This funding will ensure that the Markham Village Music Festival continues to promote the cultural spirit of the Markham community," said Minister Tsubouchi. "Our government, through support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is proud to aid volunteer initiatives that promote social and economic impact within their communities."
Among this year's innovations was the increased emphasis on musical entertainment and talent shows.
"This $69,000 grant enabled us to reposition the festival as a major music festival," said festival chair Brian Ling. "Markham has many very talented musicians and we are pleased to announce that approximately 200 musicians of all ages will be performing in talent competitions and showcases over the weekend."
Founded in 1978 by the Markham Kinsmen Club, the Markham Village Music Festival is mandated to celebrate the spirit of historic Markham Village. Held annually on the third weekend in June, this year's highlights included a parade, four stages of entertainment, 1000 craft and food vendors, a children's village and a skateboard competition.
Attracting thousands of music fans and visitors, the festival is run entirely by volunteers, including a 15-member festival committee.
